The Wine Shop was one of the original tenants when The Capitol Market opened in the fall of 1997.  The shop features a wide selection of wine, cheese, craft beer, gift items, accessories, and glassware. We are located in Hall 1 of Capitol Market. Our knowledgeable staff will provide you with personal service and is committed to taking the mystery out of purchasing wine.

Ted Armbrecht is an owner and the Managing Partner of the shop and has been on board since the shop opened in 1997.  After learning the ropes of the wine business from partner Susan MacQueen, Ted took over the reins of all aspects of the business in 2006.  He enjoys all wines but has a soft spot for champagne and pinot noir.

Scotty Scarberry is the Manager of the shop and has been a member of the team since 2006.  In addition to his managerial duties, Scotty is in charge of our cheese and beer selections.  He is constantly trying to introduce new cheeses into the shop.  Scotty has an affinity for French wines.

Beth Samples joined our staff in 2006.  She is our jack of all trades in the shop and is indispensable.  Beth favors the extremes. Very dry or very sweet wines!

Joe Dickerson joined our staff in 2008.  Joe likes learning the stories behind the wines; where they come from and the cultures that made them.  He also gravitates towards the lesser known varietals.  He likes earthy reds and steely whites.

Thea LaCour is our newest member, having joined us in 2010.  Thea comes to work everyday with a lot of energy and like everyone on the staff, really enjoys working with our customers.  She favors big reds full of character, particularly wines from South America.

Wine Selection

The Wine Shop carries a wide assortment of fine wines from all over the world.  Our prices are competitive and range from $4 to $400 a bottle, satisfying anyone’s taste or wallet.  One of our most popular features is the “Terrific Tens” rack with a constantly changing array of white and red wines under $11/bottle.  We are also very excited about our temperature controlled “Wine Room” that houses all of our premium wines.  This room is kept at a constant 56 degrees and the appropriate humidity level, insuring the perfect environment for long term ageing. 

Our knowledgeable staff is happy to suggest the perfect bottle for an intimate occasion, that special gift, or selections for your upcoming party.  We can also do special orders if you don’t see what you like.  We are committed to taking the mystery out of purchasing wine!

Frequent Buyer Program

Our goal is to appeal to the novice wine drinker as well as the serious oenophile. Getting your name is the first step to participating in our "Frequent Buyer Program". The program works this way--you must purchase $100 in wine in one month's time. Not all at once-a bottle or two at a time is fine. After that, the rest is easy! 10% of anything over that $100 goes toward a purchase the next month. For example, if you were to spend $150 this month, you would have $15 to put towards a purchase next month. You may use your discount for up to 50% of your purchase price. Your discount may be used all at once, a few dollars at a time, or rolled over from month to month. You don't have to keep track of a thing, we'll do all the work for you.

Beer

The Wine Shop stocks an ever expanding inventory of domestic and imported beers.  The growth of the craft beer industry has reached West Virginia and it feels like almost weekly new beers are being registered in the state.  This is an exciting time for beer enthusiasts in West Virginia and we are actively seeking to increase our selection.  What makes our beer selection unique is our “Mix and Match Six Pack” Program.  Buy any six beers and get a 10% discount.  This gives you an opportunity to try a multitude of different beer styles without having to purchase the whole six pack.  We also have a beer cooler if you just can’t wait for your next cold one!

Cheese Selection

The Wine Shop carries a large selection of fine imported and domestic cheeses.  It is our goal to provide the greatest selection of high quality cheeses to Charleston area residents, as well as our visitors.  Our knowledgeable staff is ready to assist you in buying the perfect cheese for any occasion, whether it’s a snack or a large party.
If you are unfamiliar with a certain style of cheese but have always been curious, stop in and we will be happy to offer you a sample. The world is full of many differing styles of cheese and we want to be able to bring them to you.

We carry a number of other products including olives, dried/smoked sausages, and specialty imported meats. We will also offer many cheese-related accessories including knives, slicers, cheese boards, cookbooks, etc.

Accessories

We carry corkscrews, glasses, gift bags, wine-related t-shirts, decanters, etc.  If its wine, beer or cheese related we have it or can get it!
